NT3 Pledge—Give the Ocean Some Love!

Lisa Proctor & David Rockefeller, Jr.

There’s all kinds of ways to express love. You can say it with a kiss. A hug. A note. A box of chocolate. And you can say it by taking action.  Join me and Sailors for the Sea founder, David Rockefeller, Jr. and thousands of others this Valentine’s Day by taking the Sailor’s for the Sea NT3 Pledge (No Trash. No Trail. No Trace.)

The ocean is in peril. It absorbs more carbon emissions than rainforests. That carbon is changing ocean chemistry. It’s called ocean acidification—the evil twin to climate change.

“Salt water and human blood are equally sensitive to changes in acidity (pH),” says Rockefeller. “If the acid level gets too high, ocean shells and corals-just like human bones- are subject to being dissolved. The result is that 20% of the world’s food supply could disappear, and coral reefs, which are nurseries for young fish could vanish entirely.”

At firefly180 marketing, I’m not only a brand strategist and creative director, I’m a passionate environmentalist. I am so honored to join my client Sailors for the Sea in launching the NT3 Pledge campaign—what could be the most significant ocean conservation movement of our time.

I’ve already taken the NT3 Pledge to reduce my carbon footprint. It’s so easy. So powerful. And it feels so delicious. (Even better than a box of dark, organic chocolate!  So take the Pledge. What better way to express your love this Valentine’s Day!

Birds of a Feather & Marketing

Spring is here and the birds are back. So am I as I practice King Pigeon pose in the midst of tiny green shoots and buds.

There is a season and rhythm to life and work. And now is the time for light and awakening. We are not separate from nature. So by listening and tuning into the season, we can reflect it back in all that we do. In this way, our work opens sleepy eyes—and our creativity sparks.

As president and creative director for an advertising and marketing agency that works with businesses and organizations that effect positive change, work is in full swing. My team and I are now deep in the process of evolving a brand for a global ocean conservation organization—and days and nights have been as full as the moon tonight. We’ve developed new brand architecture, a new logo, tagline, print collateral, website, ads and more. All is new, budding and emerging…like spring.

When I founded firefly180 marketing, it was with the clear knowing that each of us as individuals—and as businesses, can do good in the world. That our sparks—collectively and as individuals bring forth light. I’ve been blessed with seeing tangible proof for more than 20 years, as I’ve lead in the creative space of building brands that spark change.

Today as the Earth warms, sap runs and sun shines, I dedicate my King Pigeon to all the like minded birds (and businesses) who get up every morning and spread their wings. They say birds of a feather flock together and I’ve found this to be true.  Because, it’s together that we learn to fly.

The Sacred Space and Marketing.

All spaces are sacred. And The Sacred Space in Summerland, California is especially so.

Equal parts retail and transcendence,  Dorbe  (her childhood nickname for Dorothy)  who works at the store, brushed light onto a Buddha with gold-leaf as she talked about her workshop that helps attendees discover their Buddha essence—so they can bring it forward by painting it onto a Buddha or Quan Yin.

As president and creative director of firefly180 marketing, that’s what my team and I do with brands. There is joy in discovering their essence —and transcendence in painting it on with communication strategies, words, graphics, colors, images, headlines, websites, social media and more. Brands are pure essence. They are how customers connect emotionally with businesses and products.

And when strategy and creative are applied just right; they glow with the radiance of gold leaf.

Bluebirds, Winter & Marketing Moments.

Today at my office, the temperature with windchill is -25 F. When temperatures drop this low, the sky becomes bluer. More crystalline. And the snow on  the path to my office squeaks as I take each step. It’s almost as if the cold gives the snow permission to sing on days like this.Such is the song of bluebirds of happiness. They’re found everywhere. On cold days. On busy days. Even here in my office. It’s these moments where my dog Cleo, CHO  (Chief Happiness Officer)  interrupts the tapping of my keyboard for a quick hug.

As president and creative director for a marketing and advertising agency that specializes in working with clients that effect positive change in the world, I am especially attuned to happiness. I also know that happiness sells. And why wouldn’t it? It’s something we all aspire to—yet is often overlooked when we step out of what’s present—and wish instead for something different.

As marketers, happiness is also a communications strategy. As consumers, we’re hardwired to buy products and services that make us FEEL GOOD. Fortunately for me and my team, we are incredibly fortunate to work with social change marketing, organic promotions, culture shifters, change agents, yoga marketing and more—all of which are pure goodness to their core.

They beauty for me at firefly180 marketing, is that ads, radio, posters, websites, social media…and every messaging channel in-between is an opportunity to connect with the desire for consumers to feel good. Do good. And to look good.

Thanks goodness for businesses and organizations that are changing the world for the better. And better yet, thank goodness for bluebirds that can be found even when temperatures dip to -25.

When it comes to life and marketing—bigger is better.

I discovered the Great Pumpkin—in Big Sur of all places. It was the Holy Grail of goodness. The bigger than life and better-than-I-could-dream-up, live it and love it grand slam. And in this week of treats; this is no trick. Like Charlie Brown on his pumpkin patch quest, marketers and brand strategists like me are always on a lookout for concepts and creative that are  bigger, bolder and a bazillion times better than anything that’s been done before. So are our clients.

And like a needle in a haystack,we find them. Not by searching, but by feeling for that moment when our hearts open. Our heads engage. And our stomach does flip-flops. Much is said about the strategic side of marketing. But the truth is, that it all comes down to feeling. To connecting. And creating a visual and verbal language that bridges brands with audiences.

And whether that means launching new wellness brands, culture-shifting campaigns, organic food companies—or an entire array of businesses that  make the  world a better place; at firefly18o, we build brands that spark change. Like the candles that will sit at the center of pumpkins this week, each of us as businesses is a light.

Together, our efforts and intentions create brilliance.

Nature as Inspiration for Brands.

For me, there is no separation between life and work. So as I settled into a perfect sandstone bluff overlooking the Pacific, with seals chattering below and pelicans flying above—I felt the warmth and grounding of the stone. I was also working through the identity elements for a new brand firefly180 marketing  is launching.

The brand architecture and messaging strategy were complete, the logo and tagline were approved; and layout for business cards and other ID elements were underway. This new business is about to make change in a big way. And this moment, which merged sea, sun and stone, felt solid, balanced and supported. Which led me to suggest to the client, that  instead of using traditional business card stock, we should find a heavier,  more substantial and sustainable fiber to reflect the solid, credible and supportive services they’ll be offering. A simple suggestion, yes…but one that directly impacts this brand and would create a deeper, more memorable experience for clients and potential clients who receive this card.

As president and creative director for a  global and mobile advertising agency that works with mission-based based businesses, I’ve worked on brands from sailboats, beaches overlooking volcanoes, from trains in Argentina—even the Tenderloin District of San Francisco (where by the way, I found a great boutique hotel!) So whether it’s website content and design,  social media, print or digital ads…or every kind of communication strategy in-between, ideas flow from many forms.

As marketers and brand strategists, it’s those moments when we step outside the box—and out of the office, that can open us to to creative that may not have come otherwise. When we do, inspiration moves freely, like waves in an infinite sea.

Marketing & Sacred Discovery.

While hiking at Point Lobos near Monterey, California, I was struck by the magic of Spanish Moss dangling like Christmas tinsel  from Cypress trees.

I couldn’t resist reaching up and exploring further. And in that moment, a space unfolded that revealed the duality of the sacred and and mundane. The Cypress. Spanish Moss. Ordinary perhaps on their own, yet together—anything but.

As the head of an alternative marketing and advertising agency that specializes in working with progressive businesses that effect positive change, I find  the same is true when it comes to creating ads, websites, brochures, social media, videos and more.

When words combine with images in unexpected ways. When strategy meets soulfulness. And when marketing merges with messages that matter,  a kind of sacredness emerges. It’s a resonance that consumers and stakeholders not only notice—but respond to in powerful and profitable ways.

We live in a world of duality. And the day has come when for business, doing good also means doing well.

Lessons from the Past Create New Marketing Future.

While walking through La Recoleta, a 200 year old cemetery in downtown Buenos Aires, I was struck by how much of what lies beneath the surface speaks to the present. It is through death that we celebrate life. It is through endings that  we learn, grow, honor and begin again.

The same is true for business. And for brands. As a leader in progressive advertising, LOHAS (Lifestyles of Heath & Sustainability) marketing, green marketing and eco advertising, my team and I create communications strategies and  creative strategies for clients who work in progressive businesses, renewable energy, sustainability and wellness.

Brands are never static. They grow, learn  and evolve just like people. If they don’t they die. And just as in life, death is not an ending. Only a beginning. Sometimes it’s necessary for businesses to end so that the concepts, products or services they represent can change shape. Transform. And become better than they were before.

I’ve had clients in businesses that are no longer. I’ve worked in jobs that ended. Still, I am here. Growing. Evolving. And happier than ever.

So as I walk in the bright sunlight of La Recoleta , I pay homage to the life, accomplishments and history that lies hidden in the depths.

One Message One Voice

Last night I joined hundreds of thousands of Argentines in Buenos Aires for an extraordinary evening of peaceful protest. Streets filled with people of all ages banging pots and pans, shaking plastic  bottles filled with stones and pounding hammers on street sign poles. They created a rhythm that made them one.

There were no speeches. No raised and angry fists. Just a cacophony of sound. And the desire to be heard. And they were.

As the head of a progressive Minneapolis/St. Paul  based advertising and marketing agency specializing in green marketing, renewable energy advertising, organic marketing and strategic branding, my clients come to me for the same reason. They want to be heard.

The best advertising and marketing strategies amplify the voice of brands. The art is in finding the simplicity within the complexity. But once revealed, all the many layers of messages, hierarchy of audience and multitude of  goals become one clear and resonate voice. And it’s our job at firefly180 marketing to turn up the volume through print or digital channels.

Like my new Argentine friends already know, when joined together they create the rhythm of a movement. When creative and strategy join together, brands create music.
