Sustainable Marketing. Seriously?

While walking to dinner in Houston, I was struck by these amazingly, delicate and abundant red blooms spilling onto the street.

After what seemed like an endless Minnesota winter, I stopped right there and buried my nose in the scent of spring. I had to laugh as the homeowner watched me quizzically as he carried out his recycling. (I was a strange sight, I must admit.)

He laughed too as I explained how long it had been since I’d seen flowers in bloom. In that moment of spontaneity—then awkwardness and laughter,  I felt so grateful to play in the moment and be able to laugh at myself.

As the head of firefly180 marketing, a Minneapolis/St. Paul agency that specializes in green and sustainable marketing , eco advertising and wellness brands, I find that some believe mission-based advertising and marketing is heavy. Heady. And very serious.

But the truth is, there is much to be gained by being willing to laugh at ourselves. To be vulnerable. To explore. And to admit that as much as we know, there is still much to be learned.

Life, like marketing is an experience. It opens us. Enlivens us. And reminds us of all the discovery that is available when we don’t take ourselves so seriously.

One Message One Voice

Last night I joined hundreds of thousands of Argentines in Buenos Aires for an extraordinary evening of peaceful protest. Streets filled with people of all ages banging pots and pans, shaking plastic  bottles filled with stones and pounding hammers on street sign poles. They created a rhythm that made them one.

There were no speeches. No raised and angry fists. Just a cacophony of sound. And the desire to be heard. And they were.

As the head of a progressive Minneapolis/St. Paul  based advertising and marketing agency specializing in green marketing, renewable energy advertising, organic marketing and strategic branding, my clients come to me for the same reason. They want to be heard.

The best advertising and marketing strategies amplify the voice of brands. The art is in finding the simplicity within the complexity. But once revealed, all the many layers of messages, hierarchy of audience and multitude of  goals become one clear and resonate voice. And it’s our job at firefly180 marketing to turn up the volume through print or digital channels.

Like my new Argentine friends already know, when joined together they create the rhythm of a movement. When creative and strategy join together, brands create music.

The Om of Marketing

A friend of mine recently asked if I’ve always been so balanced. And I had to admit it wasn’t always so. Finding my center through life and work has been the most challenging of postures. It’s something I’ve strived for. Worked toward. Meditated about. And then…somehow when I wasn’t striving, working or meditating—it just seemed to have happened. Like magic.

It’s same kind of magic that happens in green marketing, mission-based marketing, wellness marketing, social advertising and yoga marketing…all the ways, we at firefly180 work to support our clients. There is a Tibetan Buddhist mantra, Om mani padre hom; which translated, means, “the jewel is in the lotus.”

We are the jewel. And our seated posture is the lotus. This wisdom is true as well for brand strategy, messaging, website content and design, advertising copywriting and art direction. The creative is the jewel. The lotus is the strategic foundational work.

So let your light shine in all its brilliance. And keep bringing that light forward into your work—and the world.

An Organic Expression of Gratitude: Dinner on the Farm

Local organic food not only tastes better—it’s healthier for us, the planet and farm workers. What better way to savor it, than on a visit to the farm. I got to do just that, thanks to Dinner on the Farm,  a brilliant dining concept that brings urban diners to uber organic farms near the Twin Cities.

As a leader in LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability) marketing and organic branding and marketing, I often work with businesses and organizations that promote organic food through brand development, website design, events, advertising and more.. It’s a personal passion. In fact food  itself is extraordinarily personal. And organic farmers are often our unsung heroes.

On this beautiful summer midwestern evening on a wind powered Wisconsin farm, I joined about 100 others to celebrate the earth, great food and a great community. And while I savored grilled lamb, hummus, baba ganoush, fresh naan,  herbed tomatoes and watermelon sprinkled with fragrant basil, I sang a silent song of celebration to farmers across the globe. Grateful for their work, dedication and artistry.

In the silence between the notes of that song was  the expression of gratitude for the beauty and wonder of this planet—and for the miracle of  tiny seeds (and tiny actions) bringing forth wondrous fruit and growth on every level.

A Band and Brand in Orbit—the Minor Planets!

City Pages says:Thompson has a voice that is at once heartbreakingly fragile and startlingly robust. Every note she sings is somehow imbued with a sense that this whole damn world could collapse at any moment.

Minnesota Public Radio says:Thompson and Christopher come across as two people who grew up singing together, it’s so natural and easy and not forced…the whole record, it feels so natural.

Clearly The Minor Planets‘ new album, Shadow in the Water, is sending critics into orbit. So do yourself a favor and discover a whole new galaxy of musical deliciousness right here in Minneapolis. Brands and bands have much in common They give voice to a message. They’re experiential. They’re authentic. They move you. And they groove you.

I’m extraordinarily lucky to walk the path with my friend and muse, singer/songwriter Dana Thompson as she speaks and sings her truth. Dana and her creative partner Eric Christopher have birthed a lush, moving, introspective musical journey that has fans and critics not only on their feet, but in their hearts as they explore a new, uncharted and noteworthy universe.

Dana and I met years ago while working with green and mission-based musicians like Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson and others—helping them shine light on creating change in the world. Today, I am honored to stand beside Dana as she shares her own message of music and passion with audiences far and wide.

Music is indeed the heartbeat of the universe—the time is now to tune into the Minor Planets.

Unexpected Gifts. When Brands Come into Bloom.

When staying and working at Meditasi Eco Bungalows in Amed, Bali, a favorite retreat for Eat. Pray. Love, author Elizabeth Gilbert, I came to love my outdoor bathroom. Constructed of local stone, open to the sky and filled with towering trees rooted in the earth, it was nature at its most luxurious.

When I returned for the day I would notice artfully placed flowers scattered across the floor. I wondered who had stopped by to arrange them with such care. It took a few days to realize it was the trees themselves. Because the branches reached so high, it was at first difficult to see the flowers blooming in the canopy.

Like life, the most beautiful gifts are the most unexpected. This same sense of wonder and discovery is at the heart of eco marketing, wellness advertising and LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) branding, Because I work with mission-based clients, every advertising or branding campaign is unique. There is no marketing 1101 formula. The discovery is part of the creative process that leads to brands that are memorable, successful and highly experiential.

Like the flowers that appeared on my floor, the blossoms were above me all along—I just couldn’t see them at first. But as with the firefly180 strategic and creative process that I lead, beauty is revealed. The mystery unfolds. And brands come into bloom.

Smiling Buddha and Eco Living

Lisa Proctor, Amed, Bali

You can’t help but smile when staying at Meditasi Bungalows in Amed, Bali. Add to that the fact that this beautiful and peaceful oasis that looks out onto the blue sea—is all about being green.

Owned by Smiling Buddha himself, these huts built sustainably from bamboo and stone open to the beauty of Bali in an extraordinary way. Not only does the outdoor stone bathroom look to the expanse of sky by day and and stars at night, the shower is unheated. Of course this reduces energy consumption without the need for gas, propane or electricity—but as Smiling Buddha says, hot showers are not the Balinese way. And I have to say, given the heat of the region, not at all necessary.

Meditasi also offers delicious locally grown organic food, health tonics (turmeric is recommended for a variety of conditions), fresh local fish and waves that roll just steps from your door. As a leader in green marketing for two decades, working with clients in the organic industry, renewable energy, wellness and yoga arenas,  I loved both the nature and the nurture of this place. Live is all about balance. So is work. So as I work, explore and learn from remote corners of the world, as I am now, I am continually reminded of the richness and creativity of cultures, the expansive beauty of the planet and the loving generosity of people.

Thumbs up to all of ii!

On the Path—Marketing with Purpose.

While hiking on the south island of New Zealand on the way to a mountain vista, I was struck by the beauty of a path constructed to protect the fragile landscape. In so many ways, I felt I was being led to glistening city of Oz. And in many ways I was.

But instead of a sparkling green cityscape, I was heading toward a mountain top crowned with prisms of sparkling light. I felt much the same way as I left a traditional advertising and marketing career 20 years ago. Then, as now I believe that consumers are a powerful voice for change.

Now as president of a Minneapolis/St. Paul based advertising and marketing agency that specializes in working with companies and organizations that combine passion with purpose, I know more than ever how much that is true. Whether we’re offering green marketing, organic promotion, wellness marketing or renewable energy branding and strategy, we as marketers have an extraordinary opportunity to be part of the change we seek.

Passion and purpose are not mutually exclusive. Because when you do what you love, the money will in fact follow. I know because I’ve experienced it myself. And I am honored to have helped hundreds of clients do the same.

While sometimes the path is not as clearly marked as the one I found in New Zealand, the path exists all the same. Just follow your heart. The rest will follow.

Eco Play

Lisa ProctdorWe can all take ourselves a bit too seriously. Wavy Gravy, the Woodstock clown activist famously said, “We’re all just bozos on the bus.” How true.

So in the midst of work. Life. Deadlines. And holiday celebrations, join me in taking time to play. Recharge. And dance through life. As the president and creative director of a green advertising and marketing agency near Minneapolis, I make it a priority whenever I am on either coast to dip my feet into the Atlantic or Pacific, no matter what my schedule or weather.

Creativity comes from within. So when it comes to shining light on yoga advertising, social change communications, the organic industry or wellness marketing—try to work in some play time by the sea. You’ll nurture new ways of seeing life and work.

Marketing a Clean Start

Friends had a baby recently. As I thought about gifts I could bring to celebrate the arrival of theirLisa Proctor daughter, I couldn’t help but think about the fact that new moms are the gateway to green buying.

So while I know that typical baby gifts include clothes and toys, I thought I would offer them something a bit different. A clean start so to speak. So included in my reusable gift bag, (with clothes and toys) I also added some of my favorite green cleaning products. Why? Most commercial cleaners contain a chemical cocktail that is as harmful to babies and their parents as  the planet. If you want to get your home really clean, start with clean and green products.

I’ve spent my career in the green advertising and marketing business. It’s not just a way of work for me. It’s a way of life. I’ve had the honor to launch and evolve brands using green and eco ad campaigns, work with organic branding, wellness marketing, LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) marketing and more.

I’ve won lots of awards and had the honor to work with many amazing businesses and organizations. But I’m most proud of the fact that my work and my life are very much in alignment. After all, at the center of all great brands is authenticity. Why would you hire an advertising or marketing agency that was anything less?
