Birds of a Feather & Marketing

Spring is here and the birds are back. So am I as I practice King Pigeon pose in the midst of tiny green shoots and buds.

There is a season and rhythm to life and work. And now is the time for light and awakening. We are not separate from nature. So by listening and tuning into the season, we can reflect it back in all that we do. In this way, our work opens sleepy eyes—and our creativity sparks.

As president and creative director for an advertising and marketing agency that works with businesses and organizations that effect positive change, work is in full swing. My team and I are now deep in the process of evolving a brand for a global ocean conservation organization—and days and nights have been as full as the moon tonight. We’ve developed new brand architecture, a new logo, tagline, print collateral, website, ads and more. All is new, budding and emerging…like spring.

When I founded firefly180 marketing, it was with the clear knowing that each of us as individuals—and as businesses, can do good in the world. That our sparks—collectively and as individuals bring forth light. I’ve been blessed with seeing tangible proof for more than 20 years, as I’ve lead in the creative space of building brands that spark change.

Today as the Earth warms, sap runs and sun shines, I dedicate my King Pigeon to all the like minded birds (and businesses) who get up every morning and spread their wings. They say birds of a feather flock together and I’ve found this to be true.  Because, it’s together that we learn to fly.

A change of scenery can change your branding perspective.

I just returned from several sun and sea-soaked days in the LA area and realized once again how a change of scene can quite literally change you. As a creative director and brand strategist, I make my living with words. Ideas. Concepts. And perspective.

Since my agency is virtual, I can (and do) work from any and everywhere on the planet. And I’ve found that nothing recharges creativity and leads to more expansive thinking than travel. It’s impossible not to be profoundly opened and altered by new experiences, people—and especially the dazzling sun as it reflects light on the Pacific Ocean.

My green and wellness-centric marketing agency specializes in social and environmental change. My clients are mostly sustainable businesses and organizations that are passionate about creating a better world  through organic food, yoga, alternative medicine, holistic practices, inner transformation and more.

As a leader in wellness marketing and sustainable advertising, I’ve found that the best way to continue offering high impact, memorable and jaw-dropping creative is to stay open to the jaw-dropping, perspective-changing experiences that happen all around us every day. Like the egg I found nestled among native plants as I walked to my office this morning— or a sparkling day amidst the boats, sea and sand of Corona Del Mar.

Sustainable Marketing. Seriously?

While walking to dinner in Houston, I was struck by these amazingly, delicate and abundant red blooms spilling onto the street.

After what seemed like an endless Minnesota winter, I stopped right there and buried my nose in the scent of spring. I had to laugh as the homeowner watched me quizzically as he carried out his recycling. (I was a strange sight, I must admit.)

He laughed too as I explained how long it had been since I’d seen flowers in bloom. In that moment of spontaneity—then awkwardness and laughter,  I felt so grateful to play in the moment and be able to laugh at myself.

As the head of firefly180 marketing, a Minneapolis/St. Paul agency that specializes in green and sustainable marketing , eco advertising and wellness brands, I find that some believe mission-based advertising and marketing is heavy. Heady. And very serious.

But the truth is, there is much to be gained by being willing to laugh at ourselves. To be vulnerable. To explore. And to admit that as much as we know, there is still much to be learned.

Life, like marketing is an experience. It opens us. Enlivens us. And reminds us of all the discovery that is available when we don’t take ourselves so seriously.

Plant Your Feet on Earth Day.

While most of us are celebrating Earth Day in offices today, I invite you to join me in stepping outside.

Plant your feet. Get grounded. Scatter new seeds of intention. And action.

While Earth Day is celebrated just once a year—it is in fact a 365-day holiday.

In 1990, I became one of the first marketers in the U.S. to specialize in green branding and advertising. Then my clients included recycling companies, green lawn care services, green retail stores, organic food companies, non-toxic cleaning products—even musician and icon John Denver, who was a passionate environmentalist.

Today, it seems that not much has changed. And yet everything has. Much that has become mainstream; recycling, buying recycled, organic food, plant-based cleaning supplies and more were once new ideas. This I experienced first-hand, since as a green marketer, my job has been to educate consumers about their power to effect change.

Today will be marked by tree plantings, parades, speeches, news reports and actions big and small. Much will be said about how much more is needed.  I am celebrating Earth Day by looking back. And looking forward.

Looking back, I see that as consumers we have created the demand for hybrid cars, new wind farms, double-digit growth in organic food and energy-saving light bulbs of all kinds—where once these products didn’t exist.  And looking forward, I see a galvanizing force of open-hearted, committed people who are passionate about doing all they can to walk lightly on our Earth.

So as you take off your shoes and plant your feet on sand, soil, concrete or snow, remember that today we stand together. It is our collective actions that will continue to create the change we seek. And it is our willingness to pick up our feet, and move one step at a time forward, that is forging a new path for our planet and for generations to come.

One Message One Voice

Last night I joined hundreds of thousands of Argentines in Buenos Aires for an extraordinary evening of peaceful protest. Streets filled with people of all ages banging pots and pans, shaking plastic  bottles filled with stones and pounding hammers on street sign poles. They created a rhythm that made them one.

There were no speeches. No raised and angry fists. Just a cacophony of sound. And the desire to be heard. And they were.

As the head of a progressive Minneapolis/St. Paul  based advertising and marketing agency specializing in green marketing, renewable energy advertising, organic marketing and strategic branding, my clients come to me for the same reason. They want to be heard.

The best advertising and marketing strategies amplify the voice of brands. The art is in finding the simplicity within the complexity. But once revealed, all the many layers of messages, hierarchy of audience and multitude of  goals become one clear and resonate voice. And it’s our job at firefly180 marketing to turn up the volume through print or digital channels.

Like my new Argentine friends already know, when joined together they create the rhythm of a movement. When creative and strategy join together, brands create music.

Have You Hugged Your Brand Today?

Having worked in the green marketing space for most of my career, I’ve been called a tree hugger more than once. And I’ve hugged my share of trees. If you haven’t, go outside and grab the first one you see. Mother Nature can always use a bit of love.

So can brands. At firefly180, a Minneapolis-St. Paul based marketing agency that specializes in green marketing, LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability) marketing, wellness advertising and social change promotion—we love brands. If fact, through our brand work, strategy and creative process you could say we hug them daily. Which I guess makes us brand huggers.

Sadly, brands are often taken for granted. They can get a bit dusty. Out of date. Less relevant. And, well, a tad boring. That’s where firefly180 comes in. We wake up brands. Shine them up. Bring out their authentic and unforgettable voices. And we love them. Truly, we do.

So take a look at your brand. How is it positioned for 2012 and beyond? How is your audience responding? How does it reflect your organization’s growth and learning? Whether it’s time for a complete make-over, a strategic evolution or simply a hug. Give us a call. We’ll love it as if it were our own.

The Om of Marketing

A friend of mine recently asked if I’ve always been so balanced. And I had to admit it wasn’t always so. Finding my center through life and work has been the most challenging of postures. It’s something I’ve strived for. Worked toward. Meditated about. And then…somehow when I wasn’t striving, working or meditating—it just seemed to have happened. Like magic.

It’s same kind of magic that happens in green marketing, mission-based marketing, wellness marketing, social advertising and yoga marketing…all the ways, we at firefly180 work to support our clients. There is a Tibetan Buddhist mantra, Om mani padre hom; which translated, means, “the jewel is in the lotus.”

We are the jewel. And our seated posture is the lotus. This wisdom is true as well for brand strategy, messaging, website content and design, advertising copywriting and art direction. The creative is the jewel. The lotus is the strategic foundational work.

So let your light shine in all its brilliance. And keep bringing that light forward into your work—and the world.

A Band and Brand in Orbit—the Minor Planets!

City Pages says:Thompson has a voice that is at once heartbreakingly fragile and startlingly robust. Every note she sings is somehow imbued with a sense that this whole damn world could collapse at any moment.

Minnesota Public Radio says:Thompson and Christopher come across as two people who grew up singing together, it’s so natural and easy and not forced…the whole record, it feels so natural.

Clearly The Minor Planets‘ new album, Shadow in the Water, is sending critics into orbit. So do yourself a favor and discover a whole new galaxy of musical deliciousness right here in Minneapolis. Brands and bands have much in common They give voice to a message. They’re experiential. They’re authentic. They move you. And they groove you.

I’m extraordinarily lucky to walk the path with my friend and muse, singer/songwriter Dana Thompson as she speaks and sings her truth. Dana and her creative partner Eric Christopher have birthed a lush, moving, introspective musical journey that has fans and critics not only on their feet, but in their hearts as they explore a new, uncharted and noteworthy universe.

Dana and I met years ago while working with green and mission-based musicians like Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson and others—helping them shine light on creating change in the world. Today, I am honored to stand beside Dana as she shares her own message of music and passion with audiences far and wide.

Music is indeed the heartbeat of the universe—the time is now to tune into the Minor Planets.

Unexpected Gifts. When Brands Come into Bloom.

When staying and working at Meditasi Eco Bungalows in Amed, Bali, a favorite retreat for Eat. Pray. Love, author Elizabeth Gilbert, I came to love my outdoor bathroom. Constructed of local stone, open to the sky and filled with towering trees rooted in the earth, it was nature at its most luxurious.

When I returned for the day I would notice artfully placed flowers scattered across the floor. I wondered who had stopped by to arrange them with such care. It took a few days to realize it was the trees themselves. Because the branches reached so high, it was at first difficult to see the flowers blooming in the canopy.

Like life, the most beautiful gifts are the most unexpected. This same sense of wonder and discovery is at the heart of eco marketing, wellness advertising and LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) branding, Because I work with mission-based clients, every advertising or branding campaign is unique. There is no marketing 1101 formula. The discovery is part of the creative process that leads to brands that are memorable, successful and highly experiential.

Like the flowers that appeared on my floor, the blossoms were above me all along—I just couldn’t see them at first. But as with the firefly180 strategic and creative process that I lead, beauty is revealed. The mystery unfolds. And brands come into bloom.

Smiling Buddha and Eco Living

Lisa Proctor, Amed, Bali

You can’t help but smile when staying at Meditasi Bungalows in Amed, Bali. Add to that the fact that this beautiful and peaceful oasis that looks out onto the blue sea—is all about being green.

Owned by Smiling Buddha himself, these huts built sustainably from bamboo and stone open to the beauty of Bali in an extraordinary way. Not only does the outdoor stone bathroom look to the expanse of sky by day and and stars at night, the shower is unheated. Of course this reduces energy consumption without the need for gas, propane or electricity—but as Smiling Buddha says, hot showers are not the Balinese way. And I have to say, given the heat of the region, not at all necessary.

Meditasi also offers delicious locally grown organic food, health tonics (turmeric is recommended for a variety of conditions), fresh local fish and waves that roll just steps from your door. As a leader in green marketing for two decades, working with clients in the organic industry, renewable energy, wellness and yoga arenas,  I loved both the nature and the nurture of this place. Live is all about balance. So is work. So as I work, explore and learn from remote corners of the world, as I am now, I am continually reminded of the richness and creativity of cultures, the expansive beauty of the planet and the loving generosity of people.

Thumbs up to all of ii!
