Magic, Minneapolis & LOHAS.

While most LOHASIANS gather in Boulder, Colorado yearly for the international LOHAS Forum, LOHAS came to Minneapolis this week as  kindred business spirits chatted over glasses of organic wine and uniquely delicious appetizers.

Uniquely delicious is exactly what LOHAS is. A nearly $300 billion market psychograhic that unites the powerful  consumer force that’s made recycling, hybrids, organic food, energy-efficient lighting and more mainstream—LOHAS is all about experience.

That’s what you get at the LOHAS Forum June 18 – 20th as progressive, earth-and life-changing business leaders gather to inspire and get inspired.

As a pioneer in green and wellness marketing, I was one of the first marketers to begin speaking LOHAS in the mid ’90s. I’ve been fluent ever since, bringing this unique brand of experience, passion and positive change to organizations like Green Mountain Energy, Utne Reader, The Organic Center and more.

Having known LOHAS president, Ted Ning,  for more than a decade, I can tell you with certainty that he is a passionate force for change. His level of commitment, innovation and dedication to all things experiential is part of the alchemy of LOHAS. So join me and Ted at the LOHAS Forum. It’s only once a year. And it’s pure magic.

People v. State of Illusion—seeing is believing. Or is it?

Sanskrit teachings dating back 5,000 years tell us that life is an illusion. So if all is an illusion. We have the opportunity to perceive  whatever illusion we’re living as either very, very good…or a prison of our own making.

Austin Vickers, a former trial attorney and now documentary filmmaker, is presenting just that case in his film People v  the State of Illusion. Playing this weekend in Minneapolis and St. Paul and sponsored by the Continuum Center, this film explores the frontiers of neuroscience, the nature of reality and our infinite capacity to imagine the kind of life we want to live into. “Imagination” Vickers says, “Is one of our few renewable resources.”

As the head of a progressive advertising and marketing agency that specializes in working with clients who create positive change in the world, my team and I get paid for our ability to engage our imaginations. To see beyond lines that have already been drawn. To discover new color and life in images and words. And to uncover powerful ways of engaging hearts and minds. Fortunately for us, when it comes to imagination, there truly is an infinite supply.

Imagination opens doors to different ways of thinking. And new ways of connecting with each other. In our world of instant communication, the internet has become a neuro inner-net, working like the brain to transform thought into action. It’s become a gateway for acts as ordinary as purchasing a package of peanuts—to as extraordinary as bringing  millions together in peaceful protest.

Whether through neuro-wiring or electric, we are all connected. The way we perceive the world is a choice. The illusion is believing all that we think we see.

I think you’ll love this film. So go see for yourself!

Marketing—An Expanded View

Pretty much the last time I rode a horse, it was attached to a pole in the parking lot of a grocery store. That all changed in Argentina a few days ago.

As a guest at a 20,000 acre ranch worthy of JR Ewing, I spent hours galloping through fields of wheat and cattle. As I looked out at the green expanse below and  the endless sky above,  I celebrated the total joy of trying something new. Feeling the brush of grain against my feet. And surrendering to beginner’s mind, loving the fact that even though I don’t know how to ride—my horse did.

As the head of a Minneapolis-St. Paul based advertising and marketing agency that specializes in working with mission-based businesses, non-profits, sustainable companies, yoga studios and alternative healing practitioners, I know how easy it can be to get stuck behind a desk. Or in a boardroom.

That’s why firefly180 marketing is mobile and global. My office can be as small as my 11-inch Macbook Air and as big as well…the Argentine sky. When I travel, I take my clients with me. And they love seeing the world. So do I. As I gain perspective, so do they. As I explore unchartered territory, the discoveries are reflected back into the accounts I lead. Every taste, touch, sound and new friend I make adds dimension to advertising strategy, LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health & Sustainability) branding, website design, brochures, ads and brand positioning.

While we live on a small planet, the experience is limitless. The more of our authentic selves that we bring to work, the better, more creative, more award-winning the result. So I invite you to step out beyond your office. Get out of your comfort zone. Play. Take risks. And even if you simply try a new food, ride the experience like the wind.

Horses and Brand Whispering

While in Boulder, CO at the LOHAS Forum last week, I became a horse whisperer. I’d like to think so anyway. This is a tall order for someone who has never been near horses. And perhaps taller still when you consider the fact, that I’m a bit afraid of them. They’re big. They have teeth. And I don’t speak their language—or so I thought.

But thanks to an extraordinary visionary, leader and true horse whisperer, Lisa Arie from Vista Caballo, I learned not only a lot about horses, but also about myself. According to Lisa, horses are our mirrors. You can hide nothing from them. They don’t care how successful you are. Or how much money you have. But if you’re afraid, they can feel it. If you lack confidence, they see through to your soul. And conversely, when you approach with love, clarity and purpose, you’ll make a new friend. I did.

As president of a Minneapolis/St Paul based advertising and marketing agency that specializes in LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) marketing, green marketing, wellness advertising, yoga advertising and organic marketing, my team and I develop creative and strategic communications strategies and campaigns for many kinds of progressive businesses and organizations. We build brands that spark change.

Brands, like horses have a life force all their own. If they’re inauthentic, consumers will feel it. If they lie, audiences see through them. And while I don’t really consider myself a horse whisperer, I am a brand whisperer. Brands are also mirrors. They reflect corporate culture and teach us much about ourselves, our values and our aspirations.

It’s true that while you may not be able to use energy and intention to invite a brand to nuzzle against you—you can definitely make friends with it.

Yoga as a Healthy Brand and Healing Modality

When Lisa Fecarotta, my client and founder of Veda Yoga Therapy, and I first began to work on the strategic aspects of her brand, I explained that giving birth to a business is very much like bringing a child into the world. It’s all about honoring its soul.

Great brands aren’t manufactured in a factory. Each is unique and has its own path. That’s what make them memorable. Therein lies the magic that brings brands to life. Lisa, a gifted wellness expert and yogini and I welcomed Veda into the world just days ago. And as is fitting for both our brands, we’re celebrating with Tulsi tea and a Yoga Nidra session.

As a leader in wellness marketing, yoga marketing, organic brands and mission-based marketing, clients often say that the branding process they experience with firefly180 reveals not only insights and clarity, but aspects of themselves and their businesses they had never considered. These rays of light become threads we weave into brand architecture—just as carpenters start with the wood frame of a home.

Creative aspects like logos, colors, fonts, images, text, tone…all flow from this fundamental architecture or framework. Strategy is always at the core. Just as our souls are at the core of our humanity.

So join me in a heartfelt namaste for Veda Yoga Therapy. A new brand. A new soul—offering beauty, balance, wellness and lifelong health to the world.
