Yoga as a Healthy Brand and Healing Modality

When Lisa Fecarotta, my client and founder of Veda Yoga Therapy, and I first began to work on the strategic aspects of her brand, I explained that giving birth to a business is very much like bringing a child into the world. It’s all about honoring its soul.

Great brands aren’t manufactured in a factory. Each is unique and has its own path. That’s what make them memorable. Therein lies the magic that brings brands to life. Lisa, a gifted wellness expert and yogini and I welcomed Veda into the world just days ago. And as is fitting for both our brands, we’re celebrating with Tulsi tea and a Yoga Nidra session.

As a leader in wellness marketing, yoga marketing, organic brands and mission-based marketing, clients often say that the branding process they experience with firefly180 reveals not only insights and clarity, but aspects of themselves and their businesses they had never considered. These rays of light become threads we weave into brand architecture—just as carpenters start with the wood frame of a home.

Creative aspects like logos, colors, fonts, images, text, tone…all flow from this fundamental architecture or framework. Strategy is always at the core. Just as our souls are at the core of our humanity.

So join me in a heartfelt namaste for Veda Yoga Therapy. A new brand. A new soul—offering beauty, balance, wellness and lifelong health to the world.

Finding Balance on a Mountain

On the south island of New Zealand, in a land where snow meets sky and the Maori call the tallest mountain, Cloud Piercer, I’m finding balance in a new way.

As one of the first branding and marketing strategists in the U.S. to specialize in mission-based marketing, green advertising, social change promotion, LOHAS marketing, yoga advertising and more, I’ve always been a bit ahead of the curve—but now being nearly 20 hours ahead of the U.S., I’m definitely at least a day ahead.

That gives me the opportunity to work very early or late hours and play by day. Technology offers us extraordinary connectivity. It allows us to move beyond our offices and take clients with us—even to the ends of the earth. The same kind of connectivity we experience when hiking a glacier through ice and snow that seems to touch the sky.

Standing here in tree pose after early morning Skype calls with clients, I feel extraordinary gratitude. For my work. Clients. Life. Mission. And perhaps most of all, for balance.

Reversing Your Warrior

Lisa Proctor & Suzy SchaakThe business of heading an advertising and marketing firm can feel like a competitive space.

So can running a yoga studio. But I’ve found, along with my friend and client Suzy Schaak, owner of Pure Yoga, that there’s always enough clients, business and growth for all.

We’ve chosen to reverse our warrior.

Like this elegant yoga pose which opens to the infinite, business in the green, wellness, LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) yoga marketing and yoga advertising arenas, there is infinite opportunity. Clients, students and customers are naturally drawn toward brands and businesses that speak their language. That align with values and philosophies. And that allow them to feel heard and nurtured.

Businesses that operate in fear and constriction miss the opportunity to expand. But by opening, trusting and allowing, they’ll find— along with Suzy and me— that increasing your bottom line starts with increasing your capacity to reach higher.

The Power of Wind, Sun & Water

Never underestimate the power of wind, sun and water.

While all three are great sources of renewable energy, they also have the power to renew mind, body and spirit.

So when friends invited me to sail on the St. Croix River yesterday, I knew there was absolutely nothing else I would rather do.

On a river that has its share of speed boats, our day unfolded by turning off the motor and turning on to the sound of sails slapping in the wind.

As president and creative director for a green advertising agency with expertise in renewable energy, organic branding, yoga studio marketing and wellness advertising, I know the value of turning off and tuning in. Media fills our heads with noisy messages that all compete for space in our lives. Our job is to filter out the noisy mass market “engines,” and claim the quiet. To find the natural cadence of marketing messages that matter.

While summer is in its final hours for this Minneapolis, marketing maven, the sound of silence is always in season.

Driving Response

In my business, all marketing whether it’s green advertising, yoga studio marketing, organicLisa Proctor marketing, renewable energy marketing or social change communication—it’s all designed to drive response.

Great marketing is about creating movements.Inspiring action. And building momentum. So, speaking of driving, when the clutch gave out on my car on my way to a meeting last week, I couldn’t help but feel…well, rather stuck. Especially as I waited on the side of the road for a tow truck.

Stopping gave me time to think. And to ponder next moves. What to do? Buy a sexy new hybrid? Or stick with my trusty ride that has driven many a mile powered by biodiesel.

In the end, I decided, ‘Why buy new, when used will do.” It’s the ultimate in re-use. To some, new is sexy. To me, saving resources to restore our planet is sexier.

When Marketing Brings Healing

Can wellness marketing bring healing? When your message aligns it can.

That’s definitely the case with our client Spring Forest Qigong. Their upcoming wellness conference is about awakening, healing and  empowering women. Our marketing effort is designed to inspire action, but also to create financial wellness that supports the organization. That’s a win-win. A closed loop. The perfection of reciprocity.

Like a breath—on our inhale, we breathe in oxygen. On the exhale we breathe out carbon dioxide. The CO2 is in turn absorbed by trees and transformed back into oxygen. The cycle begins again.

As a head of a green advertising agency near Minneapolis, it is such an honor to create marketing that is much about doing well as it is about doing good. Our organic industry work, social change communication, yoga studio marketing and passion for green energy effects change. And in times like these, change is good.

Extending Your Brand With Green Gifting

The holiday gift giving season has begun. As businesses get serious about choosing gifts for clients and loyal customers, two vital considerations are often overlooked:

1. What does your brand represent?
2. How can your gift extend your brand?

If the answer is environmental sustainability, fair trade,  health or wellness, I strongly recommend giving green gifts. As the owner of a green advertising agency that specializes in organic branding, social change communication, yoga studio marketing, renewable energy marketing and the LOHAS consumer, that’s not only what  I recommend to clients, it’s a philosophy I practice myself as a business owner.

A couple sites I recommend include: spiralfoundation.orgvivaterra.comheifer.org and organicbouquet.com. Of course, this is just a start. There are literally countless creative ways you can choose gifts that are not only meaningful and beautiful, but that align with your values as a global citizen. What’s important is that you consider ways to give—and give back— far beyond the holiday season.

Green Building Springs to Life in Oregon

The Oregon Sustainability Center, which is being called the first large-scale “living building,” is projected to have a zero carbon footprint, according to a recent issue of Environmental Leader.

Powered by solar and geothermal energy, this 12-story office building complete with a plant-based water filtration system, is a prototype for the future. It makes so much sense.Green marketing is another plant-based model. Each ad, message, website, social media campaign, logo and sales pitch is a closed loop. It’s a creative and strategic process that guides consumers deep into the soil to explore the root of the message, then back up to the sun where they can see the light and take action. As the head of a green marketing agency that specializes in the LOHAS consumer, green advertising, yoga studio marketing, organic branding and renewable energy marketing, I believe that nature has much to teach. All we need to do is listen.Lisa Proctor is the president and creative director of firefly180 marketing—a branding and advertising agency that specializes in LOHAS marketing, wellness marketing, green marketing and renewable energy marketing.

Calling all Yogis! Spread The Word About Yoga Day USA

Mark your calendars!

One of my favorite clients, Yoga Alliance, is once again hosting Yoga Day USA on January, 23, 2010.This is an amazing national event that invites not just yogis, but novices, couch potatoes, triathletes, young, old and everyone in between to join together to stretch mind, body and spirit through the practice of yoga.

Find out how to host a gathering or participate at: http://www.yogadayusa.org.

According to a recent Yoga Journal study, nearly 16 million Americans practice yoga. And with more and more medical research supporting its benefits, the numbers continue to climb. Not only do I love the practice of yoga, I love to create yoga advertising and work with yoga studios to develop smart, strategic marketing campaigns.

As the head of an advertising and marketing agency that specializes in the LOHAS consumer, green advertising, organic branding and green energy marketing, yoga marketing is a natural extension of the work we do with businesses and organizations that create positive change.

Ghandi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” These wise words are as true today for the actions of individuals, as they are for the decisions we make in business.

When Marketing Takes You by Surprise

Today is October 12 and this is the view outside my office door.

Look closely, you’ll see a herd of deer running by. But it’s not the deer that are surprising. In a season that is generally all about crunching through colorful fall leaves, those of us who live and office near Minneapolis are looking for snow shovels.

Just as weather can take us by surprise, so can marketing campaigns. As the head of a green advertising agency with a focus on organic branding, the LOHAS consumer, yoga studio marketing, green energy marketing and social change communication, we strive to create surprise. We live in a media climate that is in continuous hyperdrive. And yet there is a pervasive cookie-cutter blandness that stifles most marketing messages.

Today, an early snow generated national media and shook up millions in my region. Tomorrow, I hope the same is true for green marketing companies like mine. The stories of our clients are unique. Their messages are relevant. And their potential to generate change is as refreshing—and as surprising—as snow in October.
