Marketing that sparks change.

Lisa ProctorWe are made of light.

Scientists trace our origins to star dust. So why should our brands be anything less than brilliant?

My agency, firefly180 marketing, was founded with the passion to build brands that spark change. And we’ve done exactly that. Working with clients that include Target, Jack Johnson, David Rockefeller, Jr. and more,  we are honored to uncover the light within new and existing brands. We shape it. Amplify it. Then radiate possibility and purpose in the form of text, images, colors, typography, websites, social media, public relations and events.

Business is an extraordinary force for change. And marketing can be a power for good. All you need is intention. And the knowing that the light within us is a mirror for the light that surrounds us.

Marketing—Branching Out

Lisa ProctorWhen it comes to work and life, I’ve got the best seat in the house. Yes, I spend plenty of time at my desk, but when I’m looking for inspiration, I often find the roots for the best ideas in trees.

As the head of an advertising and marketing agency that works with progressive, world-changing businesses and organizations, I am so privileged to experience the light and aliveness found between the lines of an ad, the vibrancy of an image or the power of a well-run campaign.

Trees and business have much in common—starting with the fact that they both contain seeds that grow, transform and keep reaching higher.  And in the same way that rings found within a tree mark its age, the layers of brand strategy that inform how a business represents its message, product or service—signals how it makes its mark in the world.

So if you’re looking for a little perspective, climb a tree. It’s a radical shortcut to putting your business on top.

Living & Marketing on the Edge.

Life is about balance. It’s also about finding your edge. And walking it.

It’s about moving into the unknown. Dancing in the mystery. And being willing to sit in the still of creation until the spirit begins to move. As a advertising and marketing creative director, I am called to create again and again.

Each time is a leap of faith. A catapult into the unknown. Words and strategies come forward in much the same way as art emerges  from stone when a sculptor reveals art simply waiting to awaken.

There is freedom in creation. And joy. There are brand essences waiting to express themselves. Culture shifting to take place. Social and environmental movements to be born. People to reach. Audiences to educate and activate.

So find your edge. Run its length. Dance in its mystery. And  catapult your brand into the fire of creation. There you’ll find passion. Purpose. And profit for both your business and soul.

Navigating Brands.

As I prepare to move my office from the lakes and rivers of Minnesota to the salty seas of Santa Barbara, California, I’m also navigating the evolution of brands. And on this Turkish yacht anchored in Newport, Rhode Island, I’m harnessing the creative winds of change for an extraordinary ocean conservation organization, Sailors for the Sea.

Founded by David Rockefeller, Jr., Sailors for the Sea educates and activates the boating community toward healing the ocean.  And who better to lead the charge then those who experience first-hand the challenges the ocean now faces. Whether that means eliminating trash and plastic waste, reducing chemical toxicity, or fighting climate change and ocean acidification by lowering our carbon footprint, there are virtually limitless actions big and small we can all take to be part of the solution.

At firefly180 marketing, we chart the course for brands that effect positive change. It’s a collaborate process that is much like sailing. We scan the horizon for current markets and consumer or constituent perceptions, we assemble the right team to sail the ship and through brand architecture, messaging strategy, web design, content, grassroots engagement, ads, graphic design and more—we fill an organization’s sails to get them where they want to go— fast.  And always by having fun.

As businesses, we head into the unknown and deep into exploration every day.  It’s when we keep our eyes to the stars and our feet firmly planted, that we continue to chart new courses—discovering new adventures daily, along with rich rewards.

Birds of a Feather & Marketing

Spring is here and the birds are back. So am I as I practice King Pigeon pose in the midst of tiny green shoots and buds.

There is a season and rhythm to life and work. And now is the time for light and awakening. We are not separate from nature. So by listening and tuning into the season, we can reflect it back in all that we do. In this way, our work opens sleepy eyes—and our creativity sparks.

As president and creative director for an advertising and marketing agency that works with businesses and organizations that effect positive change, work is in full swing. My team and I are now deep in the process of evolving a brand for a global ocean conservation organization—and days and nights have been as full as the moon tonight. We’ve developed new brand architecture, a new logo, tagline, print collateral, website, ads and more. All is new, budding and emerging…like spring.

When I founded firefly180 marketing, it was with the clear knowing that each of us as individuals—and as businesses, can do good in the world. That our sparks—collectively and as individuals bring forth light. I’ve been blessed with seeing tangible proof for more than 20 years, as I’ve lead in the creative space of building brands that spark change.

Today as the Earth warms, sap runs and sun shines, I dedicate my King Pigeon to all the like minded birds (and businesses) who get up every morning and spread their wings. They say birds of a feather flock together and I’ve found this to be true.  Because, it’s together that we learn to fly.

Mermaids, Marketing and Work as Art.

I was born in Santa Monica and learned to swim in the ocean.  I have always been convinced that I was a mermaid.

As a girl, I would cross my ankles in salt water and wait for the moment my gangly legs would transform into a graceful tail. I still do.

While walking along the beach in Santa Barbara, I came across a street (or sand) artist  who made his living by making mermaids.

And I realized that I make my living in much the same way. As president and creative director for an advertising and marketing agency that specializes in working for clients who make change in the world—I make art.

While my medium is different…words, type, graphics, social media strategies, web design, ads and brand architecture—it is art all the same.

My art is like sand. Brands are always changing. Time and market conditions wash away old campaigns and strategies much as the sea does with sand sculpture. The beauty is, there is always new art waiting to emerge. Just like my mermaid tail.

Bluebirds, Winter & Marketing Moments.

Today at my office, the temperature with windchill is -25 F. When temperatures drop this low, the sky becomes bluer. More crystalline. And the snow on  the path to my office squeaks as I take each step. It’s almost as if the cold gives the snow permission to sing on days like this.Such is the song of bluebirds of happiness. They’re found everywhere. On cold days. On busy days. Even here in my office. It’s these moments where my dog Cleo, CHO  (Chief Happiness Officer)  interrupts the tapping of my keyboard for a quick hug.

As president and creative director for a marketing and advertising agency that specializes in working with clients that effect positive change in the world, I am especially attuned to happiness. I also know that happiness sells. And why wouldn’t it? It’s something we all aspire to—yet is often overlooked when we step out of what’s present—and wish instead for something different.

As marketers, happiness is also a communications strategy. As consumers, we’re hardwired to buy products and services that make us FEEL GOOD. Fortunately for me and my team, we are incredibly fortunate to work with social change marketing, organic promotions, culture shifters, change agents, yoga marketing and more—all of which are pure goodness to their core.

They beauty for me at firefly180 marketing, is that ads, radio, posters, websites, social media…and every messaging channel in-between is an opportunity to connect with the desire for consumers to feel good. Do good. And to look good.

Thanks goodness for businesses and organizations that are changing the world for the better. And better yet, thank goodness for bluebirds that can be found even when temperatures dip to -25.

Marketing and Radical Acts of Spontaneity

I was hiking among huge slabs of stone along the Pacific Coast recently, when I felt utterly compelled to launch into an upward dog pose. I simply couldn’t hold back. And I laughed as the seals barked their approval below me.

While this pose was in no way technically perfect, there was absolute perfection in the moment. I am no stranger to spontaneity—and am prone to goofy cartwheels on the beach or being the only one dancing in a room. For me, life is playful.

So is marketing. Yes, it’s serious business of course. It needs strategy, planning, earning targets and consumer insight. And yet it’s the unexpected moments that emerge. It’s the playfulness…that is often  most remembered. And the most high impact.

As president and creative director for a mission-based advertising and marketing agency that specializes in working with businesses that create positive change, I’m architecting new positioning for an author who is about to effect lives across the globe. Her brand is all business. Yet  there’s balance…and surprise in the words, images, colors, voice and messaging channels. You won’t have to read too far between the lines to discover fun. Delight. And joy. This brand, like everything my team and I work on—is a spontaneous and radical act of marketing.

Radicalism is a choice. And whether that means choosing radical happiness, success, impact  or peace—you don’t have to wear combat boots to get your groove on. In fact, some of our planet’s most famous change agents are most remembered in bare feet. Who knows, maybe they even tried an upward dog on a sun soaked slab of stone. I’m sure the seals below would have barked their approval.

Marketing in the Flow.

As I walked the beach in Carmel after spending the morning working on brand architecture for a client, I took a moment to savor the salty sea air and watch the pelicans form ancient patterns in the sky.

On this crystal day it was also clear that for me work and life are very much in balance. It wasn’t always so. In fact, there have been years in my career where even taking a deep breath felt much too time consuming.

But today, I’m doing more in less time, with less effort—and I’m more creative than ever. Welcome to life in the flow.

Work doesn’t have to be hard. Pushing against a tide of tasks doesn’t  get us far. It’s only by surfing the wave that we find the ease, freedom  and exhilaration that’s available.

As president and creative director for a mobile and global advertising and marketing agency that works with businesses that are creating positive change in the world, My teams and I work with companies that are creating quantum culture shifts within organizations of all kinds.

To bring forward that level of creative and strategic work, it all begins with walking our talk. And we do. (At least most of the time.) And when we find ourselves feeling crushed by a wave of deadlines, I encourage us all to get back on our boards and surf once again.

When work and life are aligned—it’s one beautiful ride.

Navigating the Marketing of Change

While I was sailing off the coast of New Zealand recently, I was also navigating a very different kind of wave. With the help of my team in the U.S., I was finishing a website and brand evolution for Ansin Consulting Group.

My mobile and global, Minneapolis/St. Paul-based advertising and marketing agency, firefly180 marketing, was hired to work with founder and visionary Ken Ansin, a major force behind the success of Cole Haan, Enterprise Bank and Trust Company and other brands—to create a business platform for making positive change.

Evolving a brand is fun. It’s strategic. And it’s incredibly powerful. And leading Ken through my  brand architecture process to get to the core of his messaging strategy, brand personality and brand voice, was a true delight. This fundamental work is much more than words on paper. It is in fact the soul of the brand. This work informed Ken’s new logo, tagline, website, content, positioning and voice.

Ken, president of Ansin Consulting Group, is very much at the forefront of navigating change. As a mission-based LOHASIAN (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) leader, his new brand speaks to a new generation of leaders who are seeking purpose and passion—along with profit.

Was it coincidence or synchronicity that led me to a sailboat while I was completing work on a brand about charting a new course? All I know is that when we follow the wind, we end up exactly where we need to be.
