When it Comes to Cloud Cult, Love is the New Green.

I’m not necessarily a follower. But  I’m proud to announce that I’ve joined a cult. Cloud Cult, the indie band, originally from Minneapolis, that now lives on an organic, geothermal- powered Wisconsin farm.

At First Avenue a few nights ago, playing to two sold-out shows, this amazing group of artists put on a show that was pure magic.

Their new album Love, is beautiful, insightful, mystical, wise and takes listeners on an inner odyssey that is guaranteed to rock your world.

The band’s label, Earthology, is committed to greening the music industry, offsets carbon from tours and developed the first 100% post-consumer recycled CD packaging in the U.S.

As a leader in the LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability) space, I know the power of music as a vehicle for change.

Working with green artists that include John Denver, Kenny Loggins, Jack Johnson and the Dave Matthews Band,  I know that music speaks to the soul and touches the heart in ways that words alone can’t.  Music and lyrics are the ultimate integrated marketing campaign. Songs become doors that open the mind to action. And for environmental artists, music can be a platform that becomes a springboard for change.

Cloud Cult doesn’t just write and perform music. They literally shower the world with love.  Just like all of us in  conscious businesses. Although not all of us can sing and compose music, our voices are heard just the same.

Synergy in Work, Life & LOHAS

For more than two decades, I have been incredibly fortunate to live my passion in life and work. When I became one of the first in the country to specialize in green marketing, Laurie Brown—who then owned Restore the Earth Store, became one of my first clients. She also became one of my closest friends.

When leaders gathered recently in Boulder, CO for the annual LOHAS Forum, Laurie and I were there.  Today we are as mission-driven as ever. Laurie at Eco Bonus, and me as the head of my own advertising and marketing agency specializing in LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health & Sustainability) marketing, green marketing, wellness advertising, yoga advertising and social marketing.

LOHAS, as a market psychographic, is very much about consumers living in alignment with their values. The same is true for those of us who lead this category. Whether through our work, activism or buying choices, we as individuals have enormous capacity to effect change. Sometimes that’s easy to forget.

But the fact is, there are countess points of light across the planet who are beacons for good. Just like, firefly180 marketing—we’re sparking change and illuminating the way.

Taming Your Dragon & World Changing Marketing

While at the Sacred Monkey Forest in Bali recently, I got the chance to tame a dragon. Everyone should try it—at least once. Especially those of us in the world of branding and marketing.

In my career I have spent hours in meetings while brands were literally wrestled to the floor. The number crunchers wanted better and faster results. The admin side wanted to squeeze strategy into a more conventional shape. All the while of course, the creatives breathed fire.

I’m glad to say that as president and creative director for a Minneapolis/St. Paul based advertising and marketing agency, our approach is much different. Working with green businesses, eco advertising, wellness marketing, yoga studios and others in the space of creating positive change—we embrace uniqueness. Strange shapes. Long spiked tails. And most of all, fire.

The secret to gaining the most from your brand is to make friends with it. Love it for its scales. Its yellow eyes. And strange green hue.  Don’t try to change it. Rather celebrate what makes it unique. Difference is what make us—and our brands memorable. After all, Why fight a dragon, when you can ride one instead?
