Nature as Inspiration for Brands.

 

For me, there is no separation between life and work. So as I settled into a perfect sandstone bluff overlooking the Pacific, with seals chattering below and pelicans flying above—I felt the warmth and grounding of the stone. I was also working through the identity elements for a new brand firefly180 marketing  is launching.

The brand architecture and messaging strategy were complete, the logo and tagline were approved; and layout for business cards and other ID elements were underway. This new business is about to make change in a big way. And this moment, which merged sea, sun and stone, felt solid, balanced and supported. Which led me to suggest to the client, that  instead of using traditional business card stock, we should find a heavier,  more substantial and sustainable fiber to reflect the solid, credible and supportive services they’ll be offering. A simple suggestion, yes…but one that directly impacts this brand and would create a deeper, more memorable experience for clients and potential clients who receive this card.

As president and creative director for a  global and mobile advertising agency that works with mission-based based businesses, I’ve worked on brands from sailboats, beaches overlooking volcanoes, from trains in Argentina—even the Tenderloin District of San Francisco (where by the way, I found a great boutique hotel!) So whether it’s website content and design,  social media, print or digital ads…or every kind of communication strategy in-between, ideas flow from many forms.

As marketers and brand strategists, it’s those moments when we step outside the box—and out of the office, that can open us to to creative that may not have come otherwise. When we do, inspiration moves freely, like waves in an infinite sea.

Marketing—An Expanded View

Pretty much the last time I rode a horse, it was attached to a pole in the parking lot of a grocery store. That all changed in Argentina a few days ago.

As a guest at a 20,000 acre ranch worthy of JR Ewing, I spent hours galloping through fields of wheat and cattle. As I looked out at the green expanse below and  the endless sky above,  I celebrated the total joy of trying something new. Feeling the brush of grain against my feet. And surrendering to beginner’s mind, loving the fact that even though I don’t know how to ride—my horse did.

As the head of a Minneapolis-St. Paul based advertising and marketing agency that specializes in working with mission-based businesses, non-profits, sustainable companies, yoga studios and alternative healing practitioners, I know how easy it can be to get stuck behind a desk. Or in a boardroom.

That’s why firefly180 marketing is mobile and global. My office can be as small as my 11-inch Macbook Air and as big as well…the Argentine sky. When I travel, I take my clients with me. And they love seeing the world. So do I. As I gain perspective, so do they. As I explore unchartered territory, the discoveries are reflected back into the accounts I lead. Every taste, touch, sound and new friend I make adds dimension to advertising strategy, LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health & Sustainability) branding, website design, brochures, ads and brand positioning.

The Om of Marketing

A friend of mine recently asked if I’ve always been so balanced. And I had to admit it wasn’t always so. Finding my center through life and work has been the most challenging of postures. It’s something I’ve strived for. Worked toward. Meditated about. And then…somehow when I wasn’t striving, working or meditating—it just seemed to have happened. Like magic.

It’s same kind of magic that happens in green marketing, mission-based marketing, wellness marketing, social advertising and yoga marketing…all the ways, we at firefly180 work to support our clients. There is a Tibetan Buddhist mantra, Om mani padre hom; which translated, means, “the jewel is in the lotus.”

We are the jewel. And our seated posture is the lotus. This wisdom is true as well for brand strategy, messaging, website content and design, advertising copywriting and art direction. The creative is the jewel. The lotus is the strategic foundational work.
