There’s all kinds of ways to express love. You can say it with a kiss. A hug. A note. A box of chocolate. And you can say it by taking action.  Join me and Sailors for the Sea founder, David Rockefeller, Jr. and thousands of others this Valentine’s Day by taking the Sailor’s for the Sea NT3 Pledge (No Trash. No Trail. No Trace.)

The ocean is in peril. It absorbs more carbon emissions than rainforests. That carbon is changing ocean chemistry. It’s called ocean acidification—the evil twin to climate change.

“Salt water and human blood are equally sensitive to changes in acidity (pH),” says Rockefeller. “If the acid level gets too high, ocean shells and corals-just like human bones- are subject to being dissolved. The result is that 20% of the world’s food supply could disappear, and coral reefs, which are nurseries for young fish could vanish entirely.”

At firefly180 marketing, I’m not only a brand strategist and creative director, I’m a passionate environmentalist. I am so honored to join my client Sailors for the Sea in launching the NT3 Pledge campaign—what could be the most significant ocean conservation movement of our time.

I’ve already taken the NT3 Pledge to reduce my carbon footprint. It’s so easy. So powerful. And it feels so delicious. (Even better than a box of dark, organic chocolate!  So take the Pledge. What better way to express your love this Valentine’s Day!

So is the passion of one conservation organization,  my client, Sailors for the Sea. Founded by philanthropist and environmentalist David Rockefeller, Jr., this organization is a collective rallying cry for the sailing and boating community—as it navigates a new course toward ocean health.

As  president and creative director of firefly 180 marketing, I am deeply honored to be part of the creative and strategic evolution of this extraordinary organization.

Brands tell their stories in many ways. Logos, taglines, websites, brochures, events, social media and more. Working in collaboration with Sailors for the Sea, we are exploring them all.

There’s a powerful story about a little boy who finds thousands of starfish washed up on the sand. He begins to throw them back one by one. When he’s asked how he can make a difference, he answers that he can make a difference to the one he holds in his hand.

This much is true. Whether it’s the collective light of fireflies, or the action it takes to save one living thing, we as individuals and organizations are powerful beyond measure. After all, the inner light of starfish nestled on the sea floor is just as brilliant as luminous stars in the night sky. At Sailors for the Sea, we are navigating toward the light.
